Makkari Hot Spring (真狩温泉)

Makkari Hot Spring (真狩温泉) has a direct view of the iconic Mount Yotei from its open-air outside bath, which is hand built out of local stones. This dedicated onsen facility popular to locals is built in a rural area with farm land surrounding it. While it’s not a very large facility it does have all the basic essentials for a relaxing visit. We especially enjoyed the option to bring your own towel (BYOT) or to purchase one for future visits.

This onsen was clean and well maintained as we had expected. We were greeted nicely by the staff as we entered and were instructed to place our shoes in a free cubby. Our timing was perfect since we arrived 15 minutes before a big group of locals showed up for their lunch break. We were the only foreigners at the onsen, however everyone was very welcoming to our group. If you’re looking for an affordable onsen with a view after a day of hiking Mount Yotei then we recommend stopping by Makkari Hot Spring.
